Sunday was an amazing afternoon of screamo and metal at Cowper Street Footscray. We were blessed with sunny weather, bubble machines, and a fantastic array of artists. The Winter house show was put on by Underthealmonds – “a purveyor of DIY backyard gig spaces”and featured sets by 6 local bands. Though there were some changes to the initial lineup, (RIP Biff and Propaine) everyone pulled through to put on a great show.
The music was ready to start at 3pm. Drums, amps and speakers were set up on the patio outside. My friend and I arrived late and sadly missed the first set by Yasmine de Laine, who was shredding on the banjo. As we made it to the venue, I Extend My Arms had just begun to lull the crowd with their atmospheric, shoegazey sound. Their music was dreamier and softer than I expected from a screamo-centric show, but it was perfect for the sunny weather and got the crowd head-nodding and swaying.
After a set break, Pala switched up the mood and
delivered some emotionally charged emoviolence. The lead singer and guitarist were captivating to watch, punctuating each beat with erratic movements. Keeping the energy high, All That’s Left of You followed up with an intense screamo set, with the lead singer memorably screaming into their guitar. Both bands gave passionate performances, complimenting the chaos and dissonance of the music.
During the two sets, there was a green alien toy being volleyed around the crowd (that smacked me in the face). It inevitably ended up on the roof twice. A beach ball was then brought out and in less than 5 minutes, it too went sailing over the roof and disappeared. As it got dark, a couple of firepits were lit in the backyard. The atmosphere was cosy and comfortable.

Around 6pm, Blight prefaced their set with a promise to bring the energy up even further, which they certainly did. As a self-described Death Metal band there was plenty of headbanging, and the mosh got a bit wilder. At one point, a human whirlpool sent my friend flying into a garden chair. People were quick to help him up, ultimately being very respectful and good natured towards each other.

The show sadly came to a close at 7pm with The World At A Glance, who swept the crowd away with their intense “doom-laden” performance. I was living for their incorporation of the violin, which gave an experimental and gothic undertone to their post-hardcore music. It was a wonderful way to end the night. After lingering around the fire pit a bit longer, we left in high spirits.
Huge thank you to Dave (@underthealmonds) for putting the show together, Hayley for hosting, and Tennace for the amazing photos. The level of support, generosity and hospitality shown was astounding and is so important to what keeps this scene thriving! Big thank you as well to the bands who gave their all to put on an inspiring and passionate show. And a reminder to get out there and support local bands!
