Monash’s very own Elkie Kershaw is set to release her new single ‘A Failed Teaspoon Collection’ on June 18th.
In her own words, Elkie describes herself as “an indie rock sweetheart” who’s music encompasses sincere songwriting with grunge-esque guitar and fun hooks, contemplating the “trials and tribulations of growing up”.
'A Failed Teaspoon Collection’ is no different. In Elkie’s own words the song is “the embodiment of pain as art and depicts the beauty of love and loss.”
On my first listen I was expecting a slow singer-songwriter acoustic song from the first verse of soft vocals and finger picked guitar. However, the song then opened into a rocky guitar-driven pre-chorus, catching me off guard in the best way. The beginning reminds me of the intimacy of other artists, such as Courtney Barnett and Angie MacMahon, with simple and candid lyrics. The chorus, however, catapults into something entirely different with a driving drum groove and heavily distorted guitar chords. The song is lyrically vulnerable and honest, expertly conveys feelings of wanting and desire, particularly with the lyric “embrace me with more than your arms”. These feelings deepen with each listen.
‘A Failed Teaspoon Collection’ lures you in with its deceptively delicate intro but as it settles it jolts you instead.
